I love em dashes.

In eighth grade, every history term-paper writing session started with a ctrl + t, “em dash” Google search, and a copy paste ready for any occasion that demanded it.

In fact, I’m rage writing this purely because the other actual piece I was working on started out with an em dash. And yes, I did in fact open a Firefox tab so I could copy it in.

To a 14 year-old who loved to qualify his statements with physical pauses and corresponding in-text parenthetical phrases, the em dash was a sleek, subtle savior. No longer did he have to rely on commas to create grammatically correct but slightly ugly clauses. The dissonant staccatos of repeated, sentence-disrupting pauses—all mentally taken at the same monotone rhythm—could be mellowed out by an intentional reminder to breathe in before the inevitable downpour of words continued.

But why do we find ourselves in this situation? The first piece I’ve put up in thirteen months an unintended interlude before something of actual substance. We can call this note a preemptive challenge, an attempt to head off any notion of Sam and Dario having a hand in things I put out. I tokenmaxx enough at work as it is, don’t need to pawn off my hobbies to it as well.
